Bidvest Wits bow out of Nedbank Cup

Despite a valiant effort by Bidvest Wits, the Nedbank Cup last 16 match against Jomo Cosmos ended in a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes and Cosmos going on to win 5-4 in the sudden death shootout.

“It’s difficult to play against Cosmos, we knew what we were up against and all credit to them – they did what they had to and got through,” said Gavin Hunt.

The match started with The Clever Boys at the forefront and in control of the game although they struggled to create and convert opportunities.

By the half-time whistle, Jomo Cosmos were a point up with pressure on Gavin Hunt’s charges to equalise.

“I changed the shape at half-time to try and go a little bit more direct, which worked. I mean they never came into our half in the second half,” added Hunt.

In the 65th minute, the Braamfontein outfit were able to equalise with a close-range header from Ngele. However, neither side were able to find the back of the net again, forcing the game into extra time.

Both teams struggled to change the scoreboard in the 30 minutes of extra time, resulting in the match being decided by a shoot out. With pressure to convert for both teams, Ezenkosi came out the final winner with The Clever Boys hot on their heels.

Bidvest Wits will now turn their focus to the ABSA Premiership League and their upcoming Confederation Cup fixture.
