A physical and tactical first half ended goalless and saw the dismissal of Kurt Lentjies for the hosts after a studs up challenge on Ntshangase. Cuthbert Malajila’s goal in the 70th minute was cancelled out four minutes later by Mohau Mokate, resulting in the sides sharing the spoils.
The best chance of the opening stanza came through the Mahlambi / Mhango combination upfront. Phaka slid a perfectly weighted ball across the face of goal and picked out Gabba Mhango who pushed his effort wide of goal from eight yards.
Minutes later Lentjies saw a straight red for lunging in two-footed and studs up on Phumlani Ntshangase, in what looked like it could be a serious injury for the young Bidvest Wits midfielder. Thankfully he was able to recover and continue.
The Clever Boys broke the deadlock in the 70th minute when Mahlambi played a through ball into Malajila’s path, the Zimbabwean striker putting his effort beyond the reach of the Team of Choice shot-stopper.
Gavin Hunt’s elation was cut short when Mokate equalized four minutes later, pouncing on a loose ball in the area from a corner that wasn’t effectively dealt with.
The result sees Bidvest Wits move to the top of the log, inching out Cape Town City on goal difference while Maritzburg move ahead of Orlando Pirates into Seventh spot.
