Clever Boys Top Absa Premiership Table

Bidvest Wits put breathing room between themselves and the chasing Absa Premiership pack with a 1-0 victory over Orlando Pirates on Thursday evening.

The encounter was fast-paced and tactical from the offset and tightly contested in the midfield with neither side wanting to give anything away.  Phakamani Mahlambi had Orlando Pirates hearts in their mouths when he went down in the area in the fourth minute, but referee Gomes waved his appeals away.
The rest of the half saw end-to-end action and missed half-chances for both sides and despite an exciting first half, the sides went into the break locked at 0 – 0 with all to play for in the second half.
Pirates came close at the start of the second half when Patrick Phungwayo marauded into the area and flashed a pass across the face of goal, Thabo Rakhale at the back post was unable to steer it on target.
The hosts took the lead in the 56th minute when Phakamani Mahlambi burst into the area and drilled his cross into the area, and a poor clearance was tapped home by Cuthbert Malajila.
Pirates did not take the goal laying down, Rakhale forcing a good save out of Money Josephs in the 64th minute, but Slimkat was equal to it.
There was a flurry of chances for both sides as the game drew to a close, Mhango forcing a good save out of Mpontshane before Qalinge missed a header at the back post.
The result sees Bidvest Wits push three points ahead at the summit of the Absa Premiership log.
