Bidvest Wits midfielder Daine Klate explains PSL success

Bidvest Wits midfielder Daine Klate says a winning mentality and being a team player has helped him win a record six PSL titles with three different club

Klate has played a key role in Wits’ maiden league triumph, as evidenced by his goal in the title-clinching 2-0 win over Polokwane City at Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday night.

The 32-year-old has netted six times in all competitions this season, while he has provided 10 assists for the MTN8 champions.

Klate previously claimed topflight honours three times with SuperSport United, also under coach Gavin Hunt, and twice with Orlando Pirates.

Asked to account for his success at different clubs, Klate says: “I am a winner and I try to contribute positively on and off the field. Myself and Moeneeb Josephs, we always say we have to lead by example not by only talking, we’ve to do it on the field.

“Obviously a good season for me at Wits with the MTN8 and the league to do the double.

“I’m just part of winning teams and try to contribute as much as I can, I am a team player. And today it’s the focus of the club, it’s not about me. I always say I will focus on my achievement when I’m done playing football. I will reflect back and take stock from what I achieved.

“For now, I just want to keep going and be happy for the team and celebrate the league victory for the club.”

Meanwhile, Klate insists he enjoys a special relationship with Clever Boys coach Hunt despite their many arguments.

“The coach is special to me, he will always be special to me. We fight a lot during the season, we had a lot of arguments over the last season. I and him fight a lot with each other, we know it’s about the reaction with him. We know when I shout at him he shouts at me back and I show him what I am going to do next time.

“This is what I am trying to instil to the players that he is a tough coach and a straightforward coach. He will tell you straight to your face how he feels and you have to prove him wrong. Our relationship has come a very long way, we have a good relationship on and off the field as well.

“He believes in me so much that after I got a red card against Sundowns, he sent me a message and said I must not worry, I must just keep my head up, I’m very important to the team and they will miss me in the next two matches.”
