Cape Town – Bidvest Wits midfielder Granwald Scott praised a fantastic team effort and described what it meant to him as Bidvest Wits were crowned Absa Premiership champions.
The Clever Boys defeated Polokwane City 2-0 at the Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday to be crowned league champions after Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a 2-2 draw with Maritzburg United.
On 60 points from their 29 matches played, Wits, claimed top honours with a game to spare.
“To be finally crowned a league champion means everything to me especially after 13 years as a professional footballer and finishing as a runner-up on three occasions,” Scott told Sport24.
“From last season when I moved to Europe and joined the most decorated side in Slovakia but also finishing as a runner-up. To Finally moving back to the PSL and winning it in style with arguably the best coach in the league and a fantastic team.”
He added that it was hard to put into words his emotions but was grateful to everyone who supported him throughout his career.
“It means everything to me, there’s too much to mention but I said previously that this was the only local piece of silverware that I was yet to win and that’s why I joined Wits.
“I know my mother who passed away is really proud of me even though she didn’t really know much about football,” Scott chuckled.
“My family are so happy for me too and I’d like to thank them, especially my sisters for everything they do for me.
“I’d like to mention my first junior coach at Kensington FC, Ivor, who used to offer me moral support, provided me with boots and transported me to different teams for trials as a 12-year-old.
“I come from very humble beginnings but I’m grateful for that because it definitely made me the person I am and I know everyone back home is very proud as it’s not often that we get to celebrate a league winner.”
Wits coach, Gavin Hunt, speaking in a post-match interview struggled to contain his emotions as he talked of the “unbelievable” experience of leading Bidvest Wits to their first ever Premiership title.
“We’ve done well, but it’s a culmination of hard work. It wasn’t easy… Yoh! Can’t really talk much, it takes time and for a club like Bidvest Wits to win the league is unbelievable.”
