Bidvest Wits travelled to Polokwane for the third time this season with the aim of extending their lead at the top of the table yet again – But what transpired at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium turned out to be one of the most exciting matches of the 2018/19 Absa Premiership season.
For all Wits’ dominance in the first half, it was Polokwane City who drew first blood after 24 minutes. Bongile Booi won a flick from Jabu Maluleke’s free-kick which flew into the back of the net. Rise and Shine doubled their lead through an identical scenario where Maluleke sent in a set-piece which was headed in by Sammy Seabi.
Gift Motupa sprung into life soon after, striking a stunning long-range effort to pull one back and give Wits a fighting chance.
Motupa kept on persisting and found the back of the net two minutes later when he outjumped Polokwane City defenders to score the equaliser from a corner kick.
The Clever Boys affirmed their dominance of the match through captain Thulani Hlatshwayo who gave Wits the lead with a calm finish from close range – Wits finally complete the comeback!
Deon Hotto came close to putting the match to bed as he let loose with a powerful long-range effort which rattled the crossbar.
Maluleke stepped up to take yet another free kick, a well taken one at that. 3-3.
Haashim Domingo came on as a substitute and scored what looked to be the match-winning goal in the 92ndminute, but he was ruled offside by the assistant referee.
Bidvest Wits collected one point on the road to keep the score board ticking over at the top of the Absa Premiership log.
