Bidvest Wits look to end Highlands’ run of wins

Bidvest Wits will look to end Highlands Park’s run of wins in the Absa Premiership when the teams meet in a catch-up midweek clash at Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday 19 February 2020.

Kick-off is at 7.30pm CAT.

Wits broke a two-game losing streak in the league by defeating Baroka FC 1-0 away from home on February 15, with Deon Hotto scoring the goal. The result left Gavin Hunt’s team in fifth place on the log – 12 points off leaders Kaizer Chiefs, but having played three games less.

The Clever Boys will be looking to improve on a home record which has seen them take 13 points from eight matches as hosts thus far in the 2019/20 season. Their last home match was a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Maritzburg United on February 12.

Highlands, meanwhile, claimed a second straight league win when they defeated Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 at home on February 15, with two goals from Peter Shalulile – it was the Namibian’s first league goals of 2020. The Lions of the North have claimed just seven points from 10 away matches this term.

Highlands moved back into the top half of the table with the victory and appear to have shaken off a mid-season wobble which threatened to throw their campaign off course. Their direct and physical style will provide a stern test for the Clever Boys in this Wednesday night battle.

In head-to-head stats, Highlands and Wits have met in five top-flight league matches since 2016/17. The Clever Boys have claimed two wins compared to one for the Lions of the North, while two games have been drawn. The University-based side has recorded one win and one draw from two home matches in the rivalry.

When the teams met earlier this season, at Makhulong Stadium in November 2019, they played out a 1-1 draw with penalties from Peter Shalulile and Thabang Monare.
