Bidvest Wits look to keep in the title hunt

Bidvest Wits will be looking to keep themselves in the Absa Premiership title hunt when they host Bloemfontein Celtic at Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday 15 January 2020.

Kick-off is at 7.30pm CAT.

Wits extended their unbeaten run to six league matches with a 0-0 draw away to Mamelodi Sundowns on January 7, despite ending the game with 10 men. The Clever Boys will look to improve on a home record which has seen them collect 10 points from six games.

Gavin Hunt’s team suffered a 2-1 loss away to Libya’s Al Nasr in the CAF Confederation Cup at the weekend, but their focus will turn to the domestic championship, where they are placed fourth on the log – 14 points adrift of leaders Kaizer Chiefs but having played four games less than the Amakhosi.

Celtic, meanwhile, claimed a second straight league win when they defeated Black Leopards 4-2 at home on January 12, courtesy of goals from Siphelele Luthuli, Victor Letsoalo and Menzi Masuku. Phunya Sele Sele have taken just nine points from eight away matches this season.

In head-to-head stats, Celtic and Wits have met in 59 league matches since 1985. The Clever Boys have claimed 25 wins compared to 19 for Phunya Sele Sele, while 15 matches have been drawn. The Johannesburg side has claimed 16 wins from 30 home matches in the rivalry, suffering six defeats in the process.

The teams’ Premiership meetings last season both produced away wins: Celtic triumphed 2-1 in Johannesburg in November 2018 thanks to a brace from Tshegofatso Mabasa, while the return game in Bloemfontein in March 2019 saw Wits win 4-2 thanks to goals from Frank Mhango, Gift Motupa and Terrence Dzvukamanja (two).

Wits’ line-up from their 0-0 draw with Sundowns on January 7: Goss, Hlanti, Mkhwanazi, Hlatshwayo, Macheke, Hotto, Alexander, Nange, Khunyedi (Nonyane 60’), Motupa (Human 77’), Domingo (Ritchie 65’).

Celtic’s line-up from their 4-2 win over Leopards on January 12: Mabokgwane, Khasipe, Mahashe, Rikhotso, Ngobeni, Luthuli, Mashikinya, Phalane, Potsane (Masuku 24’), Mabena (Motebang 71’), Letsoalo (Fikizolo 62’).
