Bidvest Wits ready for heavyweight bout

Bidvest Wits will face a heavyweight bout in the Absa Premiership when they take on the defending Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Tuesday 7 January 2020.

Kick-off is at 7.30pm CAT.

This clash is set to be a six-pointer in the Premiership title race, with both Wits and Sundowns having made up ground on leaders Kaizer Chiefs (who suffered a 2-1 loss away to SuperSport United) this past weekend. A victory for either team would likely establish them as the leading challengers to the Amakhosi.

Sundowns extended their unbeaten run in the league to five matches (with a haul of 13 points from a possible 15 in the sequence) with a 3-0 away win over AmaZulu on January 4, with goals from Sibusiso Vilakazi and Themba Zwane (two). The Brazilians have claimed 19 points from eight home matches in this campaign.

Wits claimed a third win from their last four league matches when goals from Gift Motupa and Deon Hotto took them to a 2-0 victory at Stellenbosch on January 4. The Clever Boys have claimed an impressive 16 points from a possible 18 on the road so far this season, and will back themselves to trouble the Tshwane giants in their own backyard.

In head-to-head stats, Wits and Sundowns have met in 68 league matches since 1985. The Brazilians have claimed 36 wins compared to 17 for the Clever Boys, while 15 matches have been drawn. The Tshwane side has won 20 of their 33 home league matches against their Johannesburg counterparts, suffering four defeats in the process.

When the teams met earlier this season, at Moses Mabhida Stadium in December 2019, they played out a 1-1 draw: Gaston Sirino opened the scoring for Sundowns, before Gift Motupa equalised for Bidvest Wits. The last three league meetings of the team have all ended in 1-1 draws.

Sundowns’ line-up from their 3-0 win over AmaZulu on January 4: Onyango, Morena, Langerman, Madisha, Arendse, Jali, Kekana (Mabunda 75′), Zwane, Mkhulise (Ngoma 83′), Vilakazi, Maboe (Makgalwa 66′).

Wits’ line-up from their 2-0 win over Stellenbosch on January 4: Goss, Macheke, Hlatshwayo, Mkhwanazi, Hlanti, Doutie (Ritchie 79’), Monare, Nange, Hotto, Machupu (Khunyedi 68’), Motupa (Human 85’).
