Bidvest Wits secure first win

Second half goals from Calvin Kadi and Thembinkosi Fanteni handed Bidvest Wits their first three points of the season

as The Clever Boys beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night.

The first 45 minutes was one-way traffic as the home team dominated proceedings from the first whistle.

Keen for their first win of the season, Wits played like a side possessed, with their midfield and Matthew Pattison in particular dictating terms from the onset.

The Clever Boys made their intentions clear early on as Pattison let rip with a thunderbolt in only the fifth minute of the match, but he saw his 25-yard shot sail narrowly wide of the target.

Three minutes later and Pattison was in the thick of the action as he played Calvin Kadi through on goal, but the Wits striker squandered the chance with a wasteful shot over the bar.

Pattison continued to be a thorn in the side of the Celtic defence and in the 16th minute only the acrobatics of Patrick Tignyemb kept the scores level. The midfielder struck another powerful shot goalwards, but the Celtic ‘keeper denied him with a fine save.

Bidvest Wits continued to control matters after that, but they struggled to really create any other decent chances on goal in the first half.

Instead, Celtic had the last word in the opening 45 when Joel Mogorosi fired inches over the crossbar from 25-yards out in the 36th minute.

Nonetheless, the teams entered the half time break all square.

The second 45 took the same shape as the first and Wits were in control immediately after the restart. However, unlike the first half, Wits’ finishing was much better and they soon took the lead in the 50th minute.

Some good interchanges inside the Celtic box saw Kadi in space six-yards out from goal and he made no mistake with a clinical finish to give his side the lead, 1-0.

The Clever Boys continued to dominate matters and it came as no surprise when debutant Thembinkosi Fanteni doubled their lead.

Again the build-up play was superb and again Pattison was at the heart of it as he made the final pass which saw Fanteni through on goal and he duly obliged from six yards out with a good finish, 2-0.

Celtic tried to get back into the game, but Wits had enough experience throughout their team to hold onto their lead and claim their first league win of the season.
