Buhle: Sundowns game is not special

Bidvest Wits defender Buhle Mkhwanazi has downplayed the hype surrounding the showdown with title rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, saying his side will treat the match like any other.

Mkhwanazi picked up his first Man of the Match award this season, after bagging a brace in The Clever Boys’ 5-0 rout of Baroka on Wednesday evening.

The result saw Wits move top of the Absa Premiership standings ahead of their all-important encounter against The Brazilians at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

The 27-year-old lanky centre-back, though, is of the impression that nothing special needs to be done in order to overcome their opponents this weekend, and feels a similar performance to the one against Baroka will be sufficient.

“It’s not a special game, I think, because we’ve been having this talk of saying we need to respect each and every game that comes,” said Mkhwanazi.

“What we did [against Baroka] – we were disciplined, humble and we played well – I think even on Saturday we need to do the same thing.”

The Sundowns youth academy graduate and his defensive partner and captain Thulani Hlatshwayo have been integral to Gavin Hunt’s side’s performances over the past three seasons.

With the duo arguably coming up against a Downs attack equally as potent as their own, Mkhwanazi feels it imperative that they start defending from the front in order to minimise the threat of Pitso Mosimane’s well-oiled machine.

“I think it will all boils down to the strikers, who start defending from the front. If we do that, we’re definitely going to get a clean sheet and defend well as a team,” he added.

‘Tyson’ and Mkhwanazi have become regular features on Wits’ scoresheet this season, with the pair currently on seven goals between them, and this helps alleviate pressure on their frontline.

“We are getting all the players to bang in the goals and we are not expecting the strikers alone to do the job for us.

“We are also scoring as defenders, and I’m really happy to have contributed to the three points [last night],” he concluded.
