Bidvest Wits booked their place in the last-16 of this season’s Nedbank Cup with a 3-2 penalty shootout (3-3 after extra-time) win over Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium in Soweto on Sunday.
In what will surely go down as one of the best cup fixtures in recent history, the Clever Boys emerged victorious in a game that had it all.
Goals from Bienvenu Eva Nga – a first for Bidvest WIts – and Deon Hotto handed the visitors a two-goal lead at the break. Eva Nga converted from the penalty spot while Hotto profited from an inch-perfect goal kick from Ricardo Goss who picked out the Namibian to finish with a rasping left-footed drive.
The Buccaneers fought back after the half-time break and sent the game into extra-time following goals from Thembinkosi Lorch and Zakhele Lepasa within the space of six second half minutes.
Pirates took the lead in extra-time as Lepasa converted from the spot himself after Elias Pelembe was sent off for protesting with Victor Gomes.
The Mozambique international felt Bidvest Wits should’ve been awarded another penalty following a challenge on Gift Motupa at the other end of the pitch, before Phathutshedzo Nange’s foul moments later.
Down to 10-men and a goal down, the visitors had a mountain to climb in the second half of extra-time, but Motupa made sure that the could would be decided from the spot as he found the back of the net in the 120th minute of play.
Bidvest Wits duly emerged victorious on penalties with Lorenzo Gordinho – on debut – netting the winner for the Gavin Hunt’s men.
