Bidvest Wits booked their place in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over Chippa United at Bidvest Stadium on Monday evening, duly exacting revenge on their visitors following defeat to the same opponents in last season’s competition.
The Clever Boys are the last of the eight teams to punch their quarterfinal ticket and did so thanks to two goals in two first-half minutes from Thulani Hlatshwayo and Phathutshedzo Nange.
Bidvest Wits join Mamelodi Sundowns, Black Leopards, Highlands Park, TS Sporting, Real Kings, Baroka FC and Bloemfontein in tomorrow evening’s last eight draw.
The hosts took a deserved lead in the 27th minute as captain Hlatshwayo nodded home Elias Pelembe’s corner-kick for his second goal in as many games.
Nange doubled the Clever Boys lead two minutes later as his rasping shot from range whistled past Veli Mothwa in the Chippa goal.
Bidvest Wits should’ve improved on their advantage in the second half with Thabang Monare, Terrence Dzvukamanja and Nange seeing multiple chances go begging.
In the end it mattered little as the hosts booked their spot in the quarterfinals with a comfortable win.
