Bidvest Wits will chase three important Absa Premiership points when they welcome Maritzburg United to the Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday 12 February 2020.
Kick-off is at 7.30pm CAT.
Wits have not been in league action since January 18 when they were beaten 2-0 at Cape Town City – a first away loss of the 2019/20 season. The Clever Boys should have racked up a Premiership game last Thursday, February 6, when Black Leopards visited Johannesburg, but inclement weather saw the match cancelled.
Gavin Hunt’s side come into the match placed fifth on the log and 15 points adrift of leaders Kaizer Chiefs. However, they’ve played four games less than the Soweto giants, meaning a winning run at this stage of the season would bring Wits right back into title contention.
The Clever Boys will also be looking to continue the momentum built by their dramatic Nedbank Cup triumph on Sunday, in which they overcame in-form Orlando Pirates 3-2 on penalties after a 3-3 draw over 120 minutes.
Maritzburg, meanwhile, have won just once in their last five league outings after playing to a 1-1 draw at home to Cape Town City on January 31, with Jeremy Brockie getting his name on the score sheet. The Team of Choice has claimed 11 points from 10 away matches this term.
In head-to-head stats, Maritzburg and Wits have met in 24 league matches since 2006/07. The Clever Boys have claimed 12 wins compared to just three for the Team of Choice, while nine matches have been drawn. The Johannesburg team has claimed eight wins and suffered two defeats in their 12 home matches in the rivalry.
Wits took four points from Maritzburg in the teams’ two league meetings last season, drawing 0-0 in KwaZulu-Natal in September 2018 and winning 1-0 at home in Johannesburg in February 2019, thanks to a goal from Lehlohonolo Majoro. The Clever Boys will be chasing a sixth straight home win over the Team of Choice.
