Bidvest Wits kept their Absa Premiership title hopes alive after with a vital 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
The Clever Boys showed a lot of attacking intent from the word go and they almost opened the scoring early on through captain Thulani Hlatshwayo, who’s header was parried onto the top of the crossbar by goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela. A few more chances fell to Buhle Mkhwanazi, Lehlohonolo Majoro and Deon Hotto but Chippa managed to clear their lines and hold on.
Hotto was on hand to head home for Wits with 15 minutes remaining from a great cross by Elias Pelembe on the right wing, who exchanged some good passes with Haashim Domingo.
Ruzaigh Gamildien almost snatched the equaliser for Chippa with ten minutes remaining after unleashing a great free-kick that forced goalkeeper Ricardo Goss into a superb save.
Gavin Hunt’s men continued to keep up with Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns by securing the three points in Port Elizabeth.
