Golden Arrows v Bidvest Wits head to head

2May

Absa Premiership, Round 28
Princess Magogo Stadium, KwaMashu
Wednesday 02 May 2012
19h30 kick-off

Match background

Golden Arrows will look to bounce back to winning ways in the Absa Premiership when they host out-of-form Bidvest Wits at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday evening. Kick-off is at 19h30.

Arrows were beaten 3-2 by Moroka Swallows in Soweto on Sunday, a performance in which the Durban team matched the title-challengers for most of the game before succumbing to a hat-trick by the league’s top goal scorer, Siyabonga Nomvethe.

Abafana Bes’thende will be glad to be returning to their own venue, having won their last two home matches against Free State Stars (2-1) and Jomo Cosmos (3-1). Reaching the top eight of the league is perhaps beyond Muhsin Ertugral’s side at this late stage of the season (given that they are six points adrift of eighth-placed AmaZulu, who also have a game in hand) but they will look to have a strong end to the campaign, and start by inflicting more misery on their struggling opponents.

Wits have had a nightmare run in the league in 2012: they have yet to win a match since the turn of the year, going 12 outings without a victory. The Johannesburg side’s latest setback came on Saturday afternoon when they were beaten 3-1 on their own ground by Bloemfontein Celtic.

As far as head-to-head stats go, Arrows and Wits have met in 19 league matches since the 2000/01 season. The team from Johannesburg has generally had the edge on their Durban counterparts, claiming nine wins to five, with the remaining five encounters ending in draws.

Abafana Bes’thende don’t have a great home record against Wits, winning just three times from nine matches. In fact, Arrows have not beaten the Clever Boys in a home match since the 2006/07 season. Last term Wits claimed a 4-1 victory in Durban, a result Ertugral’s team will be looking to reverse in this match.

When the teams met earlier this season in Johannesburg they played to an entertaining 2-2 draw. Plenty of goals could well be on the cards for this game, as the last six league encounters between Arrows and Wits have produced no less than 28 goals at an average of almost five per match.
