Home is where the heart is

For the last two years, the Student Representative Councils (SRC) of the various Universities across South Africa has brought the plight of students in South Africa to the fore.

The Wits University SRC last year began to raise awareness for those students who do not qualify for NSFAS funding.   Only about 10% of the Wits student population are NSFAS beneficiaries. The “missing middle” are the many students who fall just above the NSFAS threshold but are still unable to afford university fees.  They are those with a household income ranging from about R120 000 per annum to approximately R400 000 per annum.

And so, the SRC #Access 2016 Campaign was born to help raise R10 million for the “missing middle”. The SRC have to date already raised 23% of the funds.

Last night at the Bidvest Stadium, which is situated on University ground at the main Witwatersrand campus, George Mogotsi from Bidvest Wits Football Club handed over a cheque for R50 000 to the SRC Humanitarian Fund.

“We as Bidvest Wits are part of a larger family here at Wits, and wanted to find some way to show the students who support us week in a week out that we are aware of their plight, and want to help.”
