Introducing Jethren Barr
Goalkeeper Jethren Barr says he is living his dream as part of the Bidvest Wits first team squad for the 2012/13 season while also completing his schooling.
The 17-year-old shot-stopper, who has been registered with the first team for this season, impressed scouts at a Nike Tournament and spent just under a year with the Bidvest Wits Development. Now he is rubbing shoulders with household names in the PSL.
“When I first joined the Bidvest Wits Development team it was tough living away from home, but I got used to it after a while and especially training twice a day was something I had never done before. But then after a while I got into the rhythm,” Barr, who comes from Pinetown in KZN, says.
The youngster is known as ‘Khuzwayo’ because of his fluent Zulu speaking abilities and is eager to get as much learning time with his more experienced teammates and wait for his chance between the sticks.
“I am still young as I just turned 17 now and playing with guys like Emille [Baron], Jackson Mabokgwane and even Ryan Harrison one can learn a lot from them.
“I have been in the first team for a short time and have already learnt so much from these guys,”
Barr also hopes to represent his country at junior level and is aiming for a call up in the future for the Under-20 national side, but acknowledges that he willneed to work hard.
“I am currently focused on school also. I am a dedicated grade 11 student and I’m keeping a balance between education and football.
“Here at Bidvest Wits we have teachers and coaches that help us with keeping a fine balance between the two areas and excelling in both.
“After completing my high school studies I want to pursue a career in law. It can also help with my soccer career as well – it will be a win-win situation,” Barr concluded.
