Match Preview – BIDVest Wits F.C vs Bloemfontein Celtic F.C
Competition: Absa Premiership
Venue: BIDVest Stadium
BIDVest Wits will look to continue their promising start to the 2009/10 Absa Premiership season when they host Bloemfontein Celtic at the BIDVest Stadium on Saturday evening, kick-off 20h00.
The Clever Boys’ most recent outing saw them claim a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at the Orlando Stadium in midweek, with new signing Mark Haskins scoring his first league goal of the season.
It was the club’s first win of the season, following on from two draws against AmaZulu (2-2 away) and Maritzburg United (1-1 home).
Now Roger De Sa’s team face up to a Celtic side that had exactly the same record in their first three games of the season: one win, two draws; four goals scored, three conceded.
Phunya Sele Sele held defending league champions SuperSport United to a draw in midweek, showing that they can mix it with the league’s top teams on their day.
The Bloemfontein side have also already broken their duck away from home by defeating Santos in Cape Town last week – a huge relief for coach Owen Da Gama after Celtic had gone the entire 2008/09 season without a win on the road.
In the teams’ 41 league encounters since 1985, Wits have won 19 games to Celtic’s 11 and outscored the Bloemfontein side 59 goals to 39.
In home matches the Clever Boys’ record is even more dominant: 14 victories from 22 matches (with just two losses) and a goals for-against record of 41-16.
Last season Wits took four points off Celtic (winning 2-1 in Bloemfontein and drawing 1-1 in Johannesburg). The University-based team hasn’t been beaten at home in a league match by Phunya Sele Sele since the 1996/97 season.
