Wits, Cosmos to renew old rivalry

BIDVest Wits will renew an old rivalry with Jomo Cosmos when the teams meet for an Absa Premiership match at the BIDVest Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon, kick-off at 15h30.

The Clever Boys have had a fantastic start to the 2009/10 season and are one of just three teams – the others being Orlando Pirates and Bloemfontein Celtic – who are as yet unbeaten in league action.

After eight rounds of the PSL, Wits lie in fourth place on the log with 14 points, just four adrift of leaders Pirates. The club has won three matches and drawn the other five.

In their most recent outing, Wits held the Buccaneers to a 1-1 draw at the Orlando Stadium, with striker Calvin Kadi scoring his seventh goal in eight starts to become the first man to find the back of the net against Pirates this season.

Kadi tops the scoring charts in the Absa Premiership and will look to extend his lead in the race for the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award when Wits host one of his former sides, Jomo Cosmos.

The Clever Boys and Ezenkosi last met the better part of two years ago, when two goals from defender Ashraf Hendricks handed Wits a 2-0 win in a home league match in mid-February 2008.

Overall, however, Cosmos have won 14 times to Wits’ 11 in the 42 league encounters between the sides since 1985. After a difficult start to the league season since returning from the second tier of South African football, Ezenkosi will be desperate to score some points, making them dangerous opponents.

One man who is most certainly looking forward to the visit of Cosmos is central defender Timothy Batabaire, who has played in both of the Clever Boys’ last two matches. The 28-year-old Ugandan joined the club earlier this season and looks to be forming a good partnership in central defence with Junaid Tefu Mashamaite.

“The atmosphere is great in the camp at the moment and we are feeling confident ahead of this match against Cosmos,” explained Batabaire.

“It’s great that we are unbeaten in the league but we are taking it game-by-game, making sure that we focus on our upcoming match. If we keep concentrating on each game as it comes and pick up points regularly then we will be in with a chance of winning the championship.”

Having come up against Cosmos many times in his five years with Phunya Sele Sele, Batabaire is expecting a tough battle from a side that is notorious for their physical approach to the game.

However, he insists that Wits need to concentrate on their own game plan, not that of their opponent’s: “It’s important that we focus on implementing the plans of coach Roger de Sa and his technical team for this match.”

“We must not get frustrated or distracted by whatever approach our opponents take. This plan has worked for us thus far this season, so why would we change it?”
