Clever Boys go down to Santos
BIDVest Wits suffered their first loss of 2010, going down 3-0 to Santos in an Absa Premiership match played at the BIDVest Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Former Wits player Phikolethu Spelman grabbed a brace, sandwiching a fine strike by winger Graham King as the People’s Team handed the Clever Boys a loss that could yet have serious implications at the bottom of the log.
Santos had the first effort on goal, with Ryan Chapman forcing Darren Keet into a good save with his legs as early as the second minute of the match.
Wits soon began to create half-chances of their own but they were unable to trouble Lee Langeveldt in the Santos goal in the first quarter hour.
A Sifiso Myeni corner kick on 18 minutes almost provided the opener for the Clever Boys but Tefu Mashamaite couldn’t direct his header on target.
On the 20 minute mark the visitors’ Mogogi Gabonamong tried his luck with a long range effort but the ball flew wide of Keet’s goal.
Wits’ Sifiso Vilakazi had a sight of goal with half an hour played but his 20-yard effort was easily saved by Langeveldt.
The Santos keeper had a much more challenging save to make just two minutes later, tipping over a powerful drive from Nkululeko Radebe.
The Cape side was forced into a substitution just a few minutes before half time, with Zairon van Beulen succumbing to injury and making way for Shafeeq Arendse.
However, it didn’t stop them taking the lead on 41 minutes, with former Wits player Phikolethu Spelman scoring against his old team after an assist by Erwin Isaacs.
And the People’s Team doubled their lead 15 minutes into the second half, with Graham King sliding home a shot from 12 yards out after more good set-up play by Isaacs.
Wits almost pulled one back on 69 minutes as substitute Thando Mngomeni, himself a former Santos player, hit the woodwork with a left-footed shot.
But more disappointment was to follow for the home side as their defence was breached for a third time in the 74th minute and again Spelman was the main protagonist, steering home Shafeeq Arendse’s cross from the left.
