Bidvest Wits came within touching distance of beating title. Rivals Mamelodi Sundowns in a top-of-the-table clash at the Bidvest Stadium – However, Masandawana managed to hold out for a draw to share the spoils.
Former Wits attacking threat Phakamani Mahlambi scored from close range to put Sundowns ahead as early as the 7thminute.
Gift Motupa almost struck back immediately as he’s header hit the woodwork and soon after was denied again by Denis Onyango. Motupa wouldn’t be denied a third time as he pressed the Downs defence, won the ball and clipped the ball over the on-rushing Onyango.
Fagrie Lakay proved to a be a menace on debut, his speed allowed him to get through on goal, only to be brought down by Wayne Arendse, who was subsequently shown a straight red card for the foul.
It was all Wits in the second half, giving a real push to get the winning goal. Motupa was brought down inside the Sundowns penalty area but the referee booked him for simulation instead.
Despite the number of chances created and pinning Downs back for long periods of time, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. The Clever Boys still maintaining top spot on the Absa Premiership log.
