Bidvest Wits’ up-and-coming left-back Deon Horn is one to watch for the future, with the 20-year-old playing a key role in the success enjoyed by the MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) team this season.
The defender explained how he first linked up with the Clever Boys’ set-up several years ago: “I joined [the Bidvest Wits academy] in 2016, so this will be my fourth year,” said Horn.
“I was at Black Aces [now Cape Town City] previously and obviously the club got sold. My agent was in contact with Wits and that’s how I got here.”
Horn believes that his selflessness and dedication to the team is his strongest asset as a player.
“I think I’m very hard working, I do everything for the team. Obviously the team comes first and then me second, so for me I’m a hard-working player,” explained the left-back.
The youngster said that he has enjoyed his time working under MDC head coach Dillon Sheppard: “There’s a lot I’ve been learning from him. Obviously to play simple, to be brave, to have heart. He just gives us the freedom to play and obviously that’s what makes us tick.”
In terms of career goals, Horn hopes to become part of the Bidvest Wits first-team set-up and eventually graduate to playing overseas, while he said the Clever Boys’ current left-back is a player he looks up to and would like to emulate.
“I’m really fond of [Sifiso] Hlanti… just the way he plays, everything encourages me to be more like him,” concluded Horn.
Bidvest Wits’ reserve team will continue their MDC campaign with a clash against Bloemfontein Celtic, 26 January at the Soshanguve Giant Stadium at 10h00.
