SuperSport back to winning ways

SuperSport United ended a run of six Absa Premiership matches without a win – or a goal – with a 2-1 victory over Bidvest Wits at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday evening.

Jabulani Maluleke scored the decisive goal for the home side, curling home a free kick with just under 10 minutes to play. An earlier own goal by Wits and a leveller from Timothy Batabaire had left the score at 1-1.

The first half saw little in the way of goalmouth action, as both teams struggled to find any kind of rhythm to their play. The first half-chances arrived around the half-hour mark, with SuperSport’s Mabhuti Khenyeza putting two acrobatic volleys off target.

The hosts almost broke the deadlock in injury time at the end of the first half. Tebogo Langerman drove a low free kick through a crowded penalty area and the ball rebounded off the base of the post. Television replays showed Wits goalkeeper Emille Baron had got a slight touch on the ball.

Unfortunately for Baron, early in the second half he had arguably the worst ‘keeping howler of the season. The former Kaizer Chiefs player fumbled a simple cross from the right flank towards his own net and defender Timothy Batabaire only succeeded in forcing the ball into the goal with his vain effort to try and effect a clearance.

Yet Matsatsantsa’s lead lasted just ten minutes. The home side were unable to defend a set piece that saw Brad Ritson flick the ball on towards the far post where it was forced home from close range by Batabaire.

On 71 minutes United were mere inches away from restoring their lead, as former Bafana Bafana star Sibusiso Zuma cut inside from the left and fired a fierce drive from a tight angle that rebounded off the underside of the crossbar and bounced away to safety.

Ten minutes later Gavin Hunt’s men did succeed in restoring their advantage, as midfielder Jabulani Maluleke found the back of the net from a free kick inside the ‘D’ of Bidvest Wits’ penalty area.
