Bidvest Wits earned their first point in Group C of the CAF Confederation Cup after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Horoya AC at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Sunday evening.
It was a largely frustrating night for the Clever Boys who travel to Bamako next week to take on Djoliba in the second round of group stage fixtures. Up next for Horoya is a home match against Libya’s Al-Nasr in Conakry.
Following a rather uneventful first half, the game finally sparked into life late in the second as the hosts upped the tempo in search of a valuable home win.
This left them vulnerable to the counter-attack and after surviving a late scare following a reckless challenge by Zita Macheke in the penalty area, the Clever Boys conjured their best chance of the match.
Gift Motupa, who scored four goals in leading Wits to a 6-0 win over UD Songo and into their maiden CAFCC campaign, lost his marker before launching an acrobatic effort at goal but the Horoya goalkeeper pulled off a superb close-range save to deny Wits in what proved to be the final kick of the game.
