Pienaar started his career at Ajax Cape Town before moving overseas to join Ajax Amsterdam in 2001. He then spent the last 16 years of his career in Europe, lending his skills to teams such as Everton, Tottenham and Hotspur. He is now back home and joins the Clever Boys under a one-year contract with an option to renew it for one more year at the end of the upcoming season.
“It’s been great to be back, seeing my family and obviously joining the team. I’m really happy, the squad has been excellent, the spirit in the team is high- energy and motivational which is important,” said Pienaar.
As defending champions, it is going to be an important season for the Clever Boys. “It’s going to be a tough season, we have to do better than last season and that’s something I look forward to. There is obviously a lot of pressure on us this season but I think we will rise to the challenge. Defending the league isn’t going to be easy but I think we all have the same goal,” continued Pienaar.
Even for a football veteran like Steven, there are still new goals to beat. “Being back home will be a bit of a challenge, the football is different, it’s also a completely different pitch and climate so that will be the main challenge. As a footballer, you have to simply adjust and give it your all. I want to play as many games as possible and make sure we bring the titles back home with us,” concluded Pienaar.
